Free MLB Baseball Picks & Predictions: St Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds Game Preview for Friday Night

St Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will hand the ball to veteran right-hander John Lackey Friday night in hopes of taking this series opener and slowing down the red hot Reds. The 36 year-old native of Abilene, Texas will be starting his first full season for the Cardinals after getting traded from Boston to St Louis last summer. The 6-6, 235 pound two-time World Series Champion for the Angels and Red Sox went 3-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 10 games started for the Cardinals last season after going 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in 21 games started for the Red Sox to start the season last year.

Lackey spent the first 12 seasons of his career pitching in the American league before the trade last season and he struggled some adjusting. Lackey gave up 69 hits in just 60.2 innings pitched last season for St Louis and allowed batters to hit .286 against him. Lackey has faced the Reds four times in his career as he is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts. Three of those starts came last season pitching for the Cardinals and he allowed 5 earned runs on 14 hits in 15 2/3 innings while going 1-0 with two no decisions.

The St Louis Cardinals are currently listed at 12/1 odds to win the 2015 World Series

Manager Bryan Price will look to keep his Cincinnati Reds unblemished on the 2015 season when he sends out his #4 starter Jason Marquis to the mound Friday night. The 36 year-old native of Manhasset, New York signed a minor league deal with the Reds after last pitching for the San Diego Padres in the big leagues during the 2013 season and pitched well enough in spring training to earn a roster spot on Cincinnati’s opening day roster. The 6-1, 220 pound right-hander had a 3.46 ERA in spring training in 26 innings pitched but had a mediocre 14 strikeouts to 10 bases on balls.

Marquis struggled big time last season pitching in Triple A ball for the Phillies organization at Lehigh Valley. He posted a 4.63 ERA and was eventually released by the Phillies after just eight starts in late August. Marquis was 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 20 starts for the Padres in his last season pitching in the majors during 2013. Those numbers weren’t too bad but they don’t tell the entire story. Marquis had a horrendous 72 to 68 strikeout to walk ratio during that season and allowed 18 home runs in just 117.2 innings pitched.

This game is a mismatch from the starting pitching department ladies and gentleman. Frankly, Marquis doesn’t even belong pitching in the major leagues this season and we are still amazed that he is the Reds #4 starter this season. Not to be mean but the guy is a bum. He’s too old and he can’t pitch anymore at this level. We’ll be shocked if he lasts more than a couple months in Cincinnati before they realize this guy isn’t a major league starting pitcher anymore. Take St Louis and Lackey at -135 to the bank Friday night. Get more Free MLB picks and predictions daily on our top play of the day page.
